'BRANDED' BY ABI & MISSYREVIEW & INTERVIEW

5/29/2014

Fifty years ago the Commander came into power and murdered all who opposed him. In his warped mind, the seven deadly sins were the downfall of society. He created the Hole where sinners are branded according to their sins and might survive a few years. At best.
Now LUST wraps around my neck like blue fingers strangling me. I’ve been accused of a crime I didn’t commit and now the Hole is my new home.
Darkness. Death. Violence. Pain.
Now every day is a fight for survival. But I won’t die. I won’t let them win.
The Hole can’t keep me. The Hole can’t break me.
I am more than my brand. I’m a fighter.
My name is Lexi Hamilton, and this is my story.

Perception is everything to sixteen-year-old Olivia Brown. With her freakishly hot boyfriend, volunteer work at the local animal shelter, successful beauty channel on YouTube, and well-earned spot on X Factor Cheer's elite level five Diamond Girl team, Livvie's the girl every other girl wants to be. At least, that's the illusion she's aiming for.

But Livvie's seemingly perfect life is anything but. Lying about the bruises her boyfriend gives her, and cowering beneath his raging temper becomes a regular way of life until she unwittingly witnesses her drunken neighbor beating his step-son, the town bad boy, Reid Tate.

For Reid, vulnerability is the enemy. Opening up, and letting people in gives them the power to disappoint. Growing up with a co-dependent mother and an abusive alcoholic father, Reid has endured all the disappointment he can stomach.

But when his pretty, do-good neighbor witnesses his step-dad beat him to within an inch of his life, and not only call the cops, but keeps quiet at school about what she saw, Reid wonders if maybe, just maybe, he's found someone he can finally trust.

MARK OF THE CORRIPIAN BY B.H. PARKER REVIEW

Picture
In a world defined by separation, one Ability shall unite them all.

Hundreds of years from now, humans survive on the planet Macathia, where they have each developed a unique power called an Ability. These humans are separated into two societies, Solum or Kedesh, depending on their type of Ability. The land outside the two countries is occupied by the Kairian race, who has inhabited Macathia from the beginning.

Zenia was trained by her father from a young age to skillfully utilize her Ability and to defend herself from an attacker, but none of those teachings matter after she witnesses a brutal murder outside the strict borders of Solum. Forced to leave her home, she is placed in the seemingly capable hands of a knowledgeable, albeit secretive, young man. He may be the only one capable of keeping Zenia alive, but he seems to be following an agenda of his own.

Xavier doesn’t remember leaving Kedesh or joining his current agency in Solum. All he has are a dog tag with someone else’s name on it and an eerie tattoo on his right arm. So when the opportunity arises to recover his forgotten memories, Xavier decides to take a chance, even if it may be a trap and may mean placing the life of an innocent Solumian girl in danger. Is reclaiming his forgotten memories worth the death of one girl?

Amidst it all, an ancient prophecy foretelling a war between the human and Kairian races is coming true, and the only one able to save the world from its ultimate destruction will bear the mark of the Corripian

But Nev feels she doesn’t deserve to be happy. Not after what happened the night her father died.

Bodie Scott knows about grief all too well. Critically injured in an alcohol related accident the year before, Bodie struggles with the fact that he’ll never play football again, and he’s so far behind in credits he can’t see straight. That is, until he meets Nev. Haunted by their bloody pasts and wary of a shared future, Nev and Bodie turn to one another for comfort and support, and realize they’re not so alone after all. And when the party scene at school threatens the life of a loved one, the two stop at nothing to keep the past from repeating itself.

ONE MOMENT BY KRISTINA MCBRIDE REVIEW

It was supposed to be the best summer of Maggie's life. Now it's the one she'd do anything to forget.

Maggie remembers hanging out at the gorge with her closest friends after the party the night before. She remembers climbing the path hand in hand with her perfect boyfriend, Joey. She remembers that last kiss-soft, lingering, safe. So why can't she remember what happened next?

All it takes is ONE second for everything to change. One MOMENT to realise that it's the people you love who hurt you the most.

Review by Charli-Valentine
I picked up this book a few months ago after my friend and I absolutely fell in love with the front cover, and - not judging a book by it's cover - the story just sounded to compelling I had to buy it. And it was just a breathtaking read!

Picture
Sixteen-year-old Jae Hwa Lee is a Korean-American girl with a black belt, a deadly proclivity with steel-tipped arrows, and a chip on her shoulder the size of Korea itself. When her widowed dad uproots her to Seoul from her home in L.A., Jae thinks her biggest challenges will be fitting into a new school and dealing with her dismissive Korean grandfather. Then she discovers that a Korean demi-god, Haemosu, has been stealing the soul of the oldest daughter of each generation in her family for centuries. And she's next.

But that’s not Jae’s only problem.

There's also Marc. Irresistible and charming, Marc threatens to break the barriers around Jae's heart. As the two grow closer, Jae must decide if she can trust him. But Marc has a secret of his own—one that could help Jae overturn the curse on her family for good. It turns out that Jae's been wrong about a lot of things: her grandfather is her greatest ally, even the tough girl can fall in love, and Korea might just be the home she's always been looking for.

SPLIT SECOND BY SOPHIE MCKENZIE SPOILER-FREE REVIEW

Picture
Bound together by the devastating consequences of a terrorist attack on a London market, teenagers Charlie and Nat appear at first to have much in common. But, as Charlie gets closer to Nat and his family, she begins to wonder if perhaps he knows more about the attack then he has let on.

Split Second is a an action-packed thriller that shifts between the perspectives of its two main characters as their courage and their loyalties are tested to the limit.

I have never been a huge fan of action novels but Sophie Mckenzie has never failed to keep me hooked on her series and SPLIT SECOND had me gripped from the very first chapter!

SPLIT SECOND is split into three parts. Part One Investigation takes place six months after we read the events of the day of the attack. Part Two Initiation and Part Three Infiltration. You are thrown straight into the action and, without giving too much away, it doesn't stop.

An action-packed, blood-soaked, futuristic debut thriller set in a world where the murder rate is higher than the birthrate. For fans of Moira Young’s Dust Lands series, La Femme Nikita, and the movie Hanna.

Meadow Woodson, a fifteen-year-old girl who has been trained by her father to fight, to kill, and to survive in any situation, lives with her family on a houseboat in Florida. The state is controlled by The Murder Complex, an organization that tracks the population with precision.

The plot starts to thicken when Meadow meets Zephyr James, who is—although he doesn’t know it—one of the MC’s programmed assassins. Is their meeting a coincidence? Destiny? Or part of a terrifying strategy? And will Zephyr keep Meadow from discovering the haunting truth about her family?

Action-packed, blood-soaked, and chilling, this is a dark and compelling debut novel by Lindsay Cummings.
