Hundreds of years from now, humans survive on the planet Macathia, where they have each developed a unique power called an Ability. These humans are separated into two societies, Solum or Kedesh, depending on their type of Ability. The land outside the two countries is occupied by the Kairian race, who has inhabited Macathia from the beginning.
Zenia was trained by her father from a young age to skillfully utilize her Ability and to defend herself from an attacker, but none of those teachings matter after she witnesses a brutal murder outside the strict borders of Solum. Forced to leave her home, she is placed in the seemingly capable hands of a knowledgeable, albeit secretive, young man. He may be the only one capable of keeping Zenia alive, but he seems to be following an agenda of his own.
Xavier doesn’t remember leaving Kedesh or joining his current agency in Solum. All he has are a dog tag with someone else’s name on it and an eerie tattoo on his right arm. So when the opportunity arises to recover his forgotten memories, Xavier decides to take a chance, even if it may be a trap and may mean placing the life of an innocent Solumian girl in danger. Is reclaiming his forgotten memories worth the death of one girl?
Amidst it all, an ancient prophecy foretelling a war between the human and Kairian races is coming true, and the only one able to save the world from its ultimate destruction will bear the mark of the Corripian

by Zoe Scott
I enjoyed Bethany's writing style, the alternating point of views between Zenia and Xavier. I'm a big fan of alternative point of views getting to see into both characters heads and how their processes everything going on around them. Zenia and Xavier point of views are written in two different fonts, which I had to problem with. It definitely made it easier for me to hear two different voices in my head as I was reading.
I was definitely more intrigued when I was reading Xavier's point of view. I think he becomes the interesting one straight away when you learn he was no memory of the past and mysterious scars. The way Bethany has written it kept me on the edge of my reading spot, wanting to find out. Just as you thought you were getting there, you were going to find out all about Xavier... Bethany throws something else in, I loved it! Zenia was also an interesting character to read, although I can't wait to see her grow, she's the badass everyone would love to be but then she also has the softer side. I liked reading the softer side of her, for me it made her seem more real and relate-able. I can't wait to find more of both of these and see where their relationship goes. It was a very on and off situation, but as you're reading you get little senses of their feelings throughout, although you don't get any true feelings till towards to end. You may have to wait abit for the romance but I'm glad it didn't focus on it.
After Zenia sees something she shouldn't have, her life is in danger and Xavier is brought in to be her protector as well as get the chance to find out more about his past. While all of that is happening they also learn that there will be a war between the humans and the Kairians. Then you have the abilities and how the different abilities are separated. You're got the physical to mental abilities, and it's fascinating reading about them, what they can do and how they use it. This book is unlike any story I have read before, honestly one enjoyable read!
I give this book 3/3 stars. (you can see our rating system here)
