Jem Halliday is in love with her gay best friend. Not exactly ideal, but she's learning to live with it. Then the unspeakable happens. Kai is outed online... and he kills himself. Jem knows nothing she can say or do will bring him back. But she wants to know who was responsible. And she want to take them down... Review by Charli-ValentineAnother hear trenching, tear jerking, incredible novel from the wonderful author that is Cat Clarke. UNDONE is a novel based around a teenage girl, Jem and her life after her best friend Kai kills himself when he is outed in the worst possible way online, for being gay. Kai is Jem's only friend so when he leaves her she has to learn to be in a world without him, only she doesn't know if she can... Clarke is a master at writing novels that deal with the dark and gritty side of life but somehow in UNDONE she shows the light through it too, and even though this book covers a subject that a lot of people like to avoid, I found myself laughing and blushing as well as crying and gasping. |
This review is spoiler free so I cannot go through each character and event, but the characters are just all so real! The group of people that Jem gets involved with after Kai's suicide are people that we all know which means we can so easily relate to this side of Jem's story and therefore feel everything with her.
Now onto Kai...
As the story starts after Kai's death, you don't see a great deal of him, but it does go back and you see things of him throughout- but he is still one of the main characters. I am just so absolutely in love with him! I hate him for leaving Jem but his character is one that I wish I had in my life as he is loyal and loving and just an extremely special person!
Clarke writes in a style that makes her story an easy read. I love that the book always kept me on the edge of my seat, guessing whats to come, and there was always a twist around the corner that made the book just that much more special.
The ending of the book is frustrating, though dramatic and action packed. All the questions are answered that need to be but it definitely leaves you wanting more! The whole way through I had an idea of what was going to happen... Yeah, it didn't go the way I expected. Yet the ending definitely is fitting and right for the story, and Clarke's style.
I would definitely recommend this book to any YA / New Adult lover, male and female but of the ages 16-18 up as it does deal with subjects that are more mature than a lot of YA books.
There is nothing that I can say that I did not like about this book which is why I am giving it my first three star rating! It is an emotional and powerful book which Cat Clarke should be incredibly proud of.
Praise for Cat Clarke!
